The Fall in Asheville carries so much of the summer into it. The seasons seem to merge into each other in these southern mountains. We can sometimes have a short second spring. Flowers will burst forth again alongside their fall counterparts and the autumnal leaves of burnt orange, pinks, reds, purples, yellows, and ochres create a color dream. It may be the season I am most excited for, filled with a strong sense of urgency to see it and love it all and have it pour into my work.

This autumnal array reflects the process of letting go for me too. I yearn for all the color to stay, not to leave me, filling my eyes with vibrancy. Even as it fades I embrace the muted tones. Like loved ones or anything that is beloved, I want to hold on to the end, holding dearly. Fall here fills our eyes and hearts, then it is gone. Winter comes in and clears the decks. Each year, I mourn the loss of color and then gather my spirit anew in the winter light.
